The Great Purge - Part 1

It's not easy creating fansubs for JAV titles since they come out literally every day. However, the fact remains that many of them are boring to sit through, making it hard for me to put out any subtitles and enjoy my work.

I had the naive idea to translate as much JAV that comes out. However, I soon found out I wasn't enjoying what I was doing. I initially believed I hated translating, but I soon realized quite a few truths about the JAV industry, and that it applies to all forms of media entertainment.

1 - A LOT of JAV Titles Are TERRIBLE

Just like there are bad movies and bad music, there are also bad JAV titles. The problem is that the standards for making porn is pretty low. No one expects much as long as there's some fucking involved. After discovering and exploring some vintage porn, however, I realized that there is a standard of what makes an adult film good or bad.

Some good traits include:
  • Overall concept and theme.
  • Variety in sex and situations.
  • Drama, story, or funny moments.
  • Different locales and settings.
Some bad traits include:
  • Repeating the same setting.
  • Wearing the same outfit.
  • Boring actors and actresses.
I'll give an example.

HUSR-284

In this title, two guys pick up random women in Korea and fuck her. Overall, a good concept. You don't see Koreans represented much in JAVs, and they are known for their beauty standards. All of the women in this feature are gorgeous and hot.

However, what ruins this title are the two main guys.

These two guys cannot speak Korean, so they will use an app to translate certain things. The problem I have, however, isn't that they can't speak Korean, but it's that they're terrible hosts.

They're not funny. They don't have the charm of a pickup artist. The girls just kind of seem really clueless about what's going on and it looks like they're not really having a good time.

I know it's a fucking fuck movie and that they're likely just Japanese girls pretending to be Korean, or perhaps Korean girls who are in Japan for a shoot. However, watching two guys who can't speak Korean or can't communicate with the girl effectively is too cringe to watch, no matter how hot the girls are (You don't need to speak the same language to communicate wanting to fuck).

So, overall a great concept, but too cringe-inducing. It's like watching some rando speak English to a Korean BJ on Twitch.

2 - A LOT of JAV Titles are VANILLA

Just like how there are cliches and stereotypes in films and music, there are also very bland and boring JAV titles. JAVs are generally broken down into three acts:

In Act I, the girl is introduced and gets fucked for about an hour.
In Act II, the girls is teased with a vibrator. Maybe there's a blowjob or two.
In Act III, the girl is fucked again but with a climatic climax. Maybe she's fucking two guys now.

This three-act-structure is fine. However, it gets stale pretty quickly. This is because the fucking in Act I isn't much different from the fucking in Act III.

IPZZ-449
Many debut titles do this.
This girl is very cute, but the sex scenes are very vanilla.

There are, however, GOOD vanilla JAV titles, which I will do a blog post on it soon.

MUDR-283
This vanilla JAV title is so good,
you don't even need subtitles to enjoy it!

So after accepting the fact that terrible and bland JAV titles do exist, I have decided to embark on a PURGE of my personal collection (and to potential JAV titles I want to sub.)

My vetting process.

I scrub through a title and look for anything that stands out. The four things I look for are:
  • Concept and theme.
  • Variety in sex and situations.
  • Drama, story, or funny moments.
  • Different locales and settings.
And the three things that turn me off are:
  • Repeating the same setting.
  • Wearing the same outfit.
  • Boring actors and actresses.
I will soon post a link to titles I have scrubbed through and vetted. Despite many titles being thrown into the Canceled bin, there are quite a few in the Confirmed bin (meaning I will make subtitles for these JAV videos).

These titles will be worked on.

While this is a workflow I am proud of to make this hobby much more enjoyable to me, there is another concept I will introduce in Part 2 of this blog post. That post will be released as soon as the first concept subtitle is released. Be on the lookout for it soon!

MIDV-752 - Mia Nanasawa

Starring: Mia Nanasawa

Summary: Mia is a cosplayer who charges her fans for photoshoot sessions. However, her boyfriend makes fun of her customers for wasting their money, Mia sympathizes and understands that without them, she would not be able to make a living. Even worst, her boyfriend is not giving her any physical attention, and it turns out the only ones who truly care and want to shower her with attention are her number one fans!

Notes: Unleash your inner simp with Mia Nanasawa! This one is great and hilarious from the desperate otaku simps to the ignorant boyfriend. Lots of irony in the plot and Mia's transformation from reluctant innocent cosplayer to an online internet slut is amazing to experience.

What's Up With Escapism?

You might have realized I tend to work on VR titles that are a bit more immersive.

I grew up watching anime, but I also grew up reading visual novels. You know, the elaborate eroge hentai games where you read to get to the good stuff. Some of my favorite eroges include Shuffle!, Tsukihime, and Fate/Stay Night (which I read when it was first fan translated in English). Many others, however, include the really early English fan translations before the big Steam boom of visual novels and the international cultural acceptance of weeaboos. These titles include Wanko to Kurasou, Castle Fantasia 2, and Wind -a breath of heart.

I occasionally read visual novels here and there, but not as much. The latest one I read was Amatsutsumi, which I really enjoyed.

Amatsutsumi

The one thing I love about "escapism" VR titles is that much of their experience and storylines manage to nail the storytelling and erotica of visual novels. The reason I'm blogging about this is because the latest VR title I'm working on reminds me of the experiences I've had reading visual novels.

MDVR-245

Essentially, three girls confess their feelings to you on the same day. It starts off a bit wholesome and then starts treading into spicy territory soon afterwards.

I still think my two favorite escapism VR titles I've worked on are the Yui Nagase one and the Mitsuki Nagisa one. If you haven't seen them yet, I highly recommend them. They may change your perspective on "vanilla" VR scenes forever.

DSVR-1500 - Arai Rima

Starring: Arai Rima

Summary: You and Rima work at a karaoke bar. One evening, after a night of drinking with co-workers, Rima misses the last train to get home. You let her crash at your place until the first train comes in the morning. However, she's kind of a cheeky bitch and takes your kindness for granted. Though her flirty behavior is just part of her attitude and personality, you give in to the alcohol and shoot your shot. Before she realizes it, she actually wants it too, and it turns out the two of you are much more compatible than you thought.

Notes: I've always been a fan of Arai Rima, though I'm definitely much more of a fan now. Sexy, gorgeous, and sports a great figure. She just enjoys the moment, keeps her talking to a minimum, and doesn't break immersion. First scene is extremely well done, and the second scene has a bit of variety. This is one of the best "vanilla" VR movies I've worked on. Highly recommended.

The ONE Thing That Separates JAV

We all love JAV for different reasons, be it the variety of models, the wacky crazy storylines, or the kinks that leave no stone left unturned. But I think what makes JAV stand out the most compared to other adult content out there is one simple concept.

It's easy to find.

And by that, I mean, each title has a CODE.

FUNK, MUDR, SDMF, 3DSVR, TMAVR, HUNVR, HNVR... you get the idea.

In fact, that is probably the only reason you've come across this blog. You were looking for English subtitles for a JAV title using its code, because searching a JAV title by its actual name is as long and convoluted as an isekai anime title (A saint who has been summoned to another world cries 'My boyfriend is dead' and won't work for me. By the way, that dead boyfriend is me in my previous life).

Generally, when you want to find some sort of clip for Western porn, you'll either need the name of the actress or the studio that produced it. Otherwise, you're never gonna find it. For JAV, it's difficult to locate a particular work with just an actress' name, especially if they've worked on hundreds of titles.

Literally hundreds.

And this is actually the reason why JAV is popular internationally. Because it is easy to find, it is easy to identify what has already been shared amongst the community to avoid duplicate links and mis-identification on videos.

When you try to search for adult content from other countries, they're practically impossible to find unless you know the language. Korean erotica? Taiwanese porn? Good luck finding those. Unless you know of a site that specializes in them or have some way of identifying them, you're not gonna find them lying around online.

Literally impossible to find online,
even if you look up the Korean title.

Oh, and many, many free tube sites easily label JAV titles as "Korean" or "Chinese", but you'll never trick JAV enthusiasts like me.

And so, this blog and its subtitles can only exist because JAV companies adds an ID code to identify a JAV title. I don't have to state I have a subtitle for "that one VR JAV with Mikako Abe and she's your younger sister."

Are Subtitles A Viable PRODUCT?

I love JAV as much as the next guy and while it can be quite frustrating to not understand what's going on, I'm not sure I'd go so far as to pay (a LOT) of money for it.

At least, in the sense where a site starts marketing and selling subtitles as a product. I've thought about it long and hard for quite some time before I made this blog... could I sell English subtitles to JAV? Is this a viable business idea?

Ultimately, I had to get rid of that inner American in me that wants to apply Capitalism to everything, and I concluded that subtitles are not a viable product. I had to truly think about what "subtitles" are, and what "subtitles" mean to people.

To many people, it's always been free. Whenever you watch live news on television or a film on a streaming service, subtitles are always an option that can be switched on and off at will. Why would you pay extra for something like that?

I also grew up in a time where subtitles in your language are kind of expected to be free, especially for anime. Communities would get together and add subtitles to their favorite anime (often with a very quick turnaround of a day or so). Viki, a streaming service that caters to Korean dramas, have subtitles that are contributed by the community. It only licenses tv shows and they have volunteers do the hard work for them.

That's when it finally hit me. When someone seeks out subtitles for JAV, it means that they are genuinely interested in the story and what is being said. But when you're seeking out JAV for a quick fix, you don't care about what they're saying. (I sure don't care when I get the urge!)

I am extremely grateful for those who support me. As I've mentioned before, donations are never necessary, as I really do enjoy JAV that much. I will never sell my subtitles as a product, because I provide a service for JAV lovers and enthusiasts.

And these aren't just "English subtitles", they are "English fan subtitles" because I love JAV as much as you do and will put in time, effort, and attention to detail to each and every title. I love it enough to go through the crying pains of actresses yelling in my headphones, the occasional boring vanilla dead bedroom sex, and the new kinks that end up awakening something inside of me. I do get quite critical of JAV at times, but don't mind me, I'm just some rando on the internet who's seen too much JAV and has strong preferences. Either way, keep those requests coming, folks!
